New Threats to Vermont Teachers' Retiree Benefits

Darren Allen, Director of Communications for Vermont-NEA, explains that a commission is expected to make recommendations to gut retirement benefits for Vermont’s teachers and public employees. The commission – which does not include a single teacher or state employee – hired an out of state union-busting firm to propose changes to the retirement system including raising the retirement age, making retirees pay 50 percent more toward their already meager retiree health benefit, scrapping the defined benefit in favor of a risky 401(k)-type scheme and taking more out of teachers’ paychecks.
